Description of the job

We are seeking a dedicated female Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner to deliver culturally safe, healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in the community. This role is essential in ensuring culturally appropriate care, particularly for Women’s Business, while advocating for patients and their families.

As part of our team, you will help bridge the gap between healthcare services and community, supporting better health outcomes and a stronger connection to culture. This is a Maximum term Part-time role working 23 hours per week and is based at our South Brisbane campus.

Salary range: $39.35 - $43.03 per hour plus 12% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!

What you’ll be doing

As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner, you will provide a range of practical supports to patients and to Mater employees with the aim of delivering exceptional culturally responsive and safe healthcare to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Liaising with Mater clinical and clinical support areas in adopting an interdisciplinary approach to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families accessing healthcare through Mater.
  • Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to navigate the health system, ensuring they have continuity of care across the healthcare continuum.
  • In partnership with other health professionals, provide health education and promotion programs in the community to improve health literacy and empower individuals to manage their own health.
  • Engage with community members to strengthen community involvement in health service delivery and foster trust between healthcare providers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Provide cultural guidance and support to non-Indigenous staff within Mater at Home to enhance their cultural competence and responsiveness when delivering care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
  • Where time permits, and as the role evolves, provide cultural support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, including peer support and cultural supervision where appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), local Elders, and external agencies to ensure holistic and coordinated care.
  • Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies, and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high-quality, safe services and workplaces.

About you

To be successful in this role you will possess the following:

  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care.
  • AHPRA registration.
  • Current open driver’s licence, valid for use in Queensland.
  • Hold or be eligible to obtain a disability worker clearance card.
  • Understanding of and commitment to work within the mission, ethos and values of Mater.
  • Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community. Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the barriers of access to healthcare experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.
